PROTECT YOUR DIGITS THIS WINTER WINTER CAN SPELL DISASTER FOR HANDS, FEET AND NAILS HERE'S HOW TO SAVE THEM FROM THE BRINK OF DESTRUCTION By Delia du Toit s the temperatures drop, you'd think that gloved hands and socked feet would be more protected from the elements than they are in summer. But, often, dryness shows up there first. During winter, the cold, dry inland climate draws moisture from our bodies, and heaters and air conditioners only worsen the cycle, says Sarah Hetherington, manager at skincare brand African Extracts. And because your hands are often exposed to the elements, while your feet are constantly pressed into socks and closed footwear, you need to take extra care of them during colder months too. Help is at hand and intense hydration is the name of the game. Here's how: CRACKED HEELS The skin around your heels is already thicker and drier than the rest of your skin and when pressure is applied as you walk, it can split or crack. "Instead, treat your feet to a good massage once or twice a week, then use a moisturizing product designed for feet. Heel balm is your best bet to fix the problem. Look for a formulation containing urea, salicylic acid or alpha-hydroxy acids. Try: Dis-Chem's Heel Balm with 25% urea will soothe, hydrate and protect your skin. ' Skin Strategy's Gel Heel Socks moisturize your heels as you walk. 50 BENEFITS
