ENCOURAGING PLAYTIME Trained in-store advice ENCOURAGING PLAYTIME When we think about playtime, toys and games are generally what come to mind. When it comes to a newborn, however, playtime is a lot simpler. Playing with your newborn can be something as simple as singing a song to him or her while they sit in your lap. From approximately a month old, your little one will start to take an interest in the world around them. Playtime at this age will never involve playing with a doll or toy car, but they become eager to experiment with objects and interact with people. A great way to interact with your newborn is to offer him or her something to look at. You will notice that his or her eyes will soon begin to follow the object. Mobiles and rattles are great fun for those little ones – and these objects also start to teach your baby important lessons about cause and effect. Books are a great way to provide entertainment for a newborn. Read to your little one or let him or her look at the pages. Make sure the books you offer have thick cardboard pages because, before you know it, your little one will be reaching for those pages – turning them, pulling them and even tasting them. Offer your little one safe objects to touch and explore to help develop his or her senses. Make sure they are always under supervision when a new item is in their reach, but allow him or her the opportunity to explore and discover. This will help Baby to become a good problem-solver and a capable thinker. A game of “peek-a-boo” is generally always a winner with newborns…they will delight in the simple game of you covering your eyes and then greeting them with a smile. Watch out for overstimulation and avoid introducing Baby to too many new things at once, or expecting him or her to concentrate for long. When your baby needs a break, he will signal this by turning his back, closing his eyes, turning his head away, getting fussy or starting to cry.
